Do you ever wonder how your favorite YouTubers are doing what they do so very well?  Well I got some good news for you. If you’re an aspiring YouTuber or TV personality, then be sure to stick around for the tips in this video.

Maybe some of you are scratching your head thinking “What does she know?” In the spirit of full disclosure: Yes I just launched my YouTube channel but I’ve been in the field of communications for over a decade. And I’ve worked professionally as an anchor, TV presenter, and speaker.

The truth about YouTube is that it just takes time to build a following. Provided that you have good content and charisma.

Here are my tips that I’ve come up with through research in the field and from my analysis of successful YouTubers.

Thinking back to your favorite YouTuber’s channel and watch their videos you may have pondered how are they as good as they are without thinking about how they got there? Well maybe, like me you go to their very first published video from several years back and you see and hear the difference. Meaning you can unequivocally notice the tremendous improvement they’ve made.

How did they get there? Here’s how:

Practice + consistency

Consistency will build your momentum and your progress will increase exponentially. Practice as often and as much as you can. There is always a learning curve and you will improve as you go. The idea is to start as soon as possible, not when you are ready.

"If you're not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you've launched too late." -Reid Hoffman

Self-critique results in self-improvement

Most YouTubers script, storyboard, film, edit their videos themselves. During the editing process they actually see what is going on. As they edit their videos they are noticing what they do well and what needs improvement. Whether subconsciously or not, they pick up on what they’re doing well and what they need to work on.

Access to Corrective Feedback

As you grow as a YouTuber, so does your channel. Once you hit 1,000 subscribers (or 1,000 true fans a la Kevin Kelly) then you've created a community. Congratulations. As you serve that community, so too, will it serve you. YouTube has a feature whereby reaching 10k subscribers they give you premium access to the "community tab" through which you can engage with your audience by asking them personalized questions and learning their interests through polls. Before hitting 10k YouTubers leverage the comments that their subscribers leave so that they can open the lines of communication. Either way you look, your fans and subscriber base can be a real asset to your improvement on YouTube. In a way, they provide corrective feedback in that they are quite vocal about what they like and what they do not like. They provide some instrumental feedback in helping you move your channel forward. In addition to the comments from subscribers, analyzing your YouTube analytics can help you evaluate the way various videos are performing. It is a good indicator of how you are doing in the YouTube world and what you audience is receptive to. These are all data points that are profoundly shaping your channel, your online presence and maybe even your content.
