Types of Mindsets in Communication (Live)
View Post
Our mindset affects all aspects of our lives. It infuses the way we interact with other human beings and it can have a true impact on our relationship with our self and with others. We explore the three dualities of mindset in this conversation with Explearning Co Founders Mary Daphne and Greg.

In this Live Stream, we explore the topic of mindset and how it affects our communication and social interactions.

The way we think permeates our communication behavior. When you’re having a bad day people can tell. And when the sun is shining above you, people pick up on that.

Mindset shapes our behavior, leaks into our nonverbals, and influences not only what we say, but how we say it.

Mindset pervades various areas of life: spots, arts, social interaction, the list goes on.

Greg talks about his experience with mindset while playing team sports (i.e., soccer) and individual sports (i.e., tennis) at 2:30

Mary Daphne shares her experience with ballet and how her ballet teacher would allude to the notion of mindset when she’d point out that “it’s all in the mind” while referring to your ability to push yourself a little harder and hold the pose, jump higher, hold up your leg longer, and the various other things that are required in ballet training at 3:14

Mindset is something we need to be cognizant of because it permeates the various aspects of life. At 5:20 Greg and MD talk about this.

We’ve been hearing a lot recently about mindset, and we break it into 3 dualities: positive/negative mindset, growth/fixed mindset, and abundance/scarcity mindset at 6:26

We talk about positive/negative mindsets and the importance of setting an intention for the day. At 6:57 we jump in. What’s essential is to set a positive intention and voice out loud or silently that you are going to be positive today. If you remain neutral then you will become more susceptible to a negative mindset based on something that irked you, no matter how insignificant it was.

Greg and MD mention the Explearning lesson on how to change your mindset at 7:23 and adopt a positive mindset.

Biologically we are predisposed to skepticism and maybe even the negative mindset for fear of staying alive and surviving. We talk about this at 9:21 and to be positive takes pro activity because by default we are hardwired to protect ourselves and identify threats and risk.

If you practice yoga, you will become more attuned to setting an intention in your practice, which is infused in the rest of your day. We discuss this at 10:43

Greg mentions his love of routines and how that can help mitigate the stress levels surrounding work so that you can focus on having a positive mindset and not worry about tedious things at 13:30

MD mentions how minimalism in your wardrobe and having a “uniform” can also help you focus on a positive mindset because it eliminates the stress factors of deciding what to wear: 14:40

Another area where positive mindset surfaces is in situations that are frustrating: 15:27

The next mindset duality is the growth versus fixed mindset: 18:12

Once you adopt the growth mindset, the sky’s the limit. You can do whatever your imagination inspires you to do. And now, with our unfettered access to learning resources and high-quality educational materials the growth mindset is something we should adopt.

Mindset affects us as well as the people with whom we interact.

The last duality we discuss is the abundance/scarcity mindset at 27:23
