3 Ways to Be Resilient Every Day and Build Mental Fortitude
View Post
Learn how to be resilient in life by doing these three things that resilient people do every day! Building mental fortitude takes time and consistency. If you want to be more resilient do these three things every day. Here's what you can do to become mentally strong :)

In this video, we talk about how to build resilience in your everyday life. These three strategies come from Eric Barker on what resilient people do every day. Greg and Mary Daphne unpack what each of these means and how they can be applied to your everyday.

(1) Set Goals

Goal setting is important but the goals need to be specific. Think long and hard about what you prioritize in life and what your values are.

Once that becomes clear, because it is not always right off the bat, then you can write down your specific goals.

Try to have just a few, to begin with and they can be from different areas of your life.

For example, you might have a goal for your career, a goal for your mental health, a goal for your physical well-being, a goal for your family life, a goal for your romantic life, and a goal for your creative life.

These can all be goals.

Choose the categories that are most important to you and within that prioritize what goal needs your full attention right now.

(2) Agency

Goals are simply dreams if there is no action behind them.

Once we set a goal we need to hold ourselves accountable.

That is where the power of agency comes in.

We need to map out our plan of action.

It's important to have as few obstacles between us and our goal.

Let's say your goal is to run more.

The act behind that would be to actually go running.

But what obstacles stand in your way preventing you from doing that?

Let's say these are some of the obstacles: not having your running gear handy, not knowing the route you'll take, not having something to listen to.

Therefore, to minimize the number of obstacles standing in your way you could decide on your running outfit the night before and lay out your clothes, map out a route ahead of time, and download a podcast or audiobook you're genuinely looking forward to listening to.

This way, you've minimized the barriers standing in your way and you're more likely to follow through with the action thereby getting closer to your goal.

(3) Pathways

Eric describes pathways as the β€œmental movie” playing as you imagine a scenario.

He recommends focusing your attention on the middle part of the journey.

Doing so will enable you to imagine any possible adverse situations preventing you from completing the goal.

Being aware of unexpected issues will allow you to get into problem-solving mode so that if something were to go awry you'll have the mental fortitude and strategies to deal with it.

This could also help you foresee a potential problem and prevent it from ever transpiring.

Going back to our example of running more, you might factor in the risk of overtraining and prevent that from happening because you know it could be a risk.

Or, you might foresee an issue with running on the same route and decide to create multiple running routes so that you can mix it up and not tire from doing the same 'ole thing!

***

So there you have it! A summary of points raised in this conversation based on Eric Barker's post on the three things that the most resilient people do daily.

Start with one goal from one category. Once you have a good handle on that, add another category and another goal to see to fruition.

Good luck and have fun!
