How To Use Stories In Interviews
View Post
In this Explearning Communications lesson, I teach you how to use stories and anecdotes to highlight your skills when answering behavioral questions. If you want to learn how to do storytelling in interviews, then this lesson is for you! This interview strategy will help you answer behavioral interview questions.

As you guessed, it is not enough to state your skills or list what you’re good at.  The hiring manager has your resume and anything you state on there is fair game in an interview. By the way, never ever respond with “I think my resume speaks for itself.”

I want you to think of Anecdotes as (are) interview ammo.  They’re that powerful. Meaning they can bolster your argument for why you want to work at X company.

They also give a crystal-clear picture of your XP points, skill set, and background that really drives home what’s stated on your resume. It also establishes your credibility.

Anyone can say they’re good at something, but an anecdote shows and proves that you’re good at something. Anecdotes highlight your skills.

My advice to you? For every experience point (XP) or skill that you list be sure to have 2 anecdotes ready to share in the interview. By doing so, you’ll ensure that you’re ready for every curve ball thrown your way.

Pro-tip: think of anecdotes that highlight various skills and XP so that you can always have an example in your back pocket if you need it.

Generally you'll want to have anecdotes for these questions:

  • tell me about yourself
  • tell me about a challenge you overcame
  • tell me about your career passions
  • tell me about your weaknesses
  • tell me about your strengths
  • tell me why you think we should hire you
  • tell me about how your colleagues would describe you

Alright Explearners, there you have it. Be sure to use your anecdotes as interview ammo!

Happy Explearning!! 😊
