We discuss why rumination holds people back. It puts a damper on your day, negatively impacts your mood, and prevents you from achieving your full potential.

Here are some ways of jolting yourself out of the rumination cyle:

  • Ruminating thoughts can be rooted in the past or the future
  • Immerse yourself in the moment to get out of the worry cycle
  • Transform the narrative experience into a sensory
  • Switch your focus to other activities to distract your mind
  • Focus on whatever activity you are doing
  • Humans are not very good at multitasking, so immersing ourselves into one activity is better
  • Invest in the moment you’re experiencing now
  • Exerting yourself in a high-intensity activity (any type of physical exertion forces your brain to switch gears) and jolt you out of the rumination cycle
  • High intensity activities and weightlifting allow you to be fully present in the moment: mind to muscle connection
  • Lower intensity activities (walking, leisurely biking, jogging) can boost your mood and help you exercise your creativity muscle (letting ideas come to you)
  • As we get older, our creativity tapers off so we need to prioritize calming our mind and freeing our thoughts from rumination so that we can make space for creativity and new ideas
  • Time-block worry time: every day set aside some time to worry, and allow yourself to only worry and experience ruminating thoughts in that specific time frame
  • Express yourself through writing, drawing, doodling (using any motor skills) to articulate your feelings, this will help you activate your mind and steer it clear from worrying
  • Ruminating is not problem solving; it’s a bad song that’s on repeat
  • Switch the rumination cycle into a solutions cycle

These are some strategies to adopt if you are looking to ground yourself in the present and break the rumination cycle. Change takes time, but if you are committed to making positive changes in your life then you’ll stick with it! Consistency is queen/king. Embrace what you can control and let the rest unfold. Don’t worry about what you can’t control.
