How do you find your authentic communication style?

How can you be real in your social interactions? How can you be true to yourself in the way that you communicate and behave, publicly and privately?

This is what we are Explearning together today. 

“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.” Frederick Douglass

It boils down to authentic communication.

The problem with inauthentic communication is (1) you end up losing your true self in the process of conforming to others’ perception of who they think you are and (2) you might alienate the people you would actually be friends with.

What’s the solution?

In this lesson, I’m going to teach you the 3 steps to help you find your authentic communication. 

Step 1:

Think of the person or people with whom you are the most authentic. Who are you truly yourself with? Who are the people you feel you are 100% you around. 

I hope you can think of at least one person you are truly yourself around. If not, then maybe it’s time to find a new tribe? I’ll leave that to you. 

Ok so once you’ve thought of your true tribe, let’s move on to step 2.

Step 2:

Video tape yourself talking to the person. If you’re having trouble pretending the camera is your friend, then call up the person and record yourself talk to them. This way you’ll be able to watch what you do, how you speak and how you sound. 

Step 3:

Analyze the video recording. Pay attention to your prosody, your hand gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and language use. Make sure you review the recording so that you can refer to it when you need to.

Those are the 3 steps, Explearners. The next time you are in a social interaction and you feel any inkling of fakeness coming through, think back to the video recording and channel your authentic avatar. 

Not only will you start to engage with people in a more authentic way because you’re showing up as yourself, without a mask to your communication events, but you’ll also start to see your tribe growing. People are attracted to those you can be their 100% authentic self.
