This lesson is short and sweet but super important if you want to introduce yourself to people so you can make friends, do business, and have a happy life! We’re talking about introductions today.

Today we’re discussing the best way to introduce yourself without being shy or awkward. Here’s the thing. If see someone you want to talk to but can’t muster up the courage to introduce yourself then it’s game over before it ever started. Don’t miss out on an opportunity, meeting the love of your life or adding awesome people to your social circle because of a fear of being awkward.

So here are my 4 easy steps to introduce yourself with confidence, authenticity, and poise.

Give them a smile and a shake

The first thing you do when you approach someone new is smile and  extend your hand out ready for a handshake.

This signals that you are confident, approachable, and in control. This is a great way to set the expectation that you are a friendly yet professional individual.

Say your first and last name

Give your first and last name so people can look you up and get in touch. Do not say "this is (name)" or "my name is…".

Ask them their name

Now's their turn to share their information. Ask them "What’s your name" or "And you are …" to invite them to hold the floor.

Open ended question:

Now you want to ask an open ended question to get them to speak a bit.

"So (firstname) open ended question"

For example:

  • So Kim how’re you liking the conference so far?
  • So Joe,  what brings you to this event today?

By using their first name, you are acknowledging them as an individual. Also, it helps with the name retention.

Engage them for a bit and then end the conversation. But you don’t have to spell it out as goodbye.

  • Well, it was great meeting you. Enjoy the rest of the event.
  • Great chatting with you. I’ll see you around.
  • I work on the 9th floor let me know if you need anything.

That’s it! It’s as simple as that. Pretty painless right?

Recap:

  • smile, extend your hand out ready for a handshake
  • say your *first and last name* (not this is (name)) or (my name is…)  but I’m (name)
  • What’s your name  /And you are …
  • So (firstname) open ended question

Let me know in the comments about what awesome things happen to you when you introduce yourself to people you want to talk to. 😊

Add these strategies to your communication toolbox and watch your personal and social circles expand before your very eyes!

I’ll see you in the next lesson. 😊
