Have Amazing Conversations and Social Interactions as an Extrovert
View Post
Wondering how to have amazing conversations and social interactions as an extrovert? In this Explearning lesson, I teach you how you can improve your conversation skills and small talk with anyone you interact with!

If you’re an extrovert who loves social interaction, conversations with friends, business meetings, and anything in between but you’re feel like you want to improve your conversation skills this lesson is for you!

Just because you might not have crippling social anxiety does not mean that conversation comes naturally. Conversation skills can be improved upon, just like any other skill.

Today I’m sharing three things that extroverts can do to level up their social interaction skills.

>>>

(1) Seek Out Opportunities

As an extrovert, you’re probably already aware of the Goings-on. That’s terrific! If you’re not as plugged in as you would like, join groups that meet up in-person or online such as a book club or toastmasters and more and more opportunities will come onto your radar. The point is to seek out opportunities in the areas you enjoy doing but also the ones where feel like you need to improve. It’s important to do both so that it doesn’t take all the fun out of social interaction if you’re just focusing on communication events that terrify you.

(2) Challenge Yourself

If public speaking is what you’re looking for join a toastmaster group. If you’re looking to improve your casual conversation skills, join a book club. If you want to get better at networking, go to networking events. If you want to get better at talking to people in general, join a meet up group based on some of your interests. If small talk is frustrating you, find a way to strike up some small talk every time you meet someone new. This could be in random places around town or in the city you live it: at the bus stop, waiting for the subway, in line at your favorite bagel shop, at your local coffee house, etc. If you have phone phobia, make more phone calls! Find the type of social interaction that makes you feel uneasy and go after it. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.

(3) Evaluate Yourself

After you have the interaction, try to take an objective stance and evaluate yourself. Try not to be too soft or too hard on yourself. Imagine what your favorite teacher or mentor would say to you. Put yourself in their shoes when doing this exercise. How would Tim Ferris give you feedback? How would Professor Kelly from College provide pointers? Once you evaluate yourself, take some notes and come up with an action plan. The action plan should be steps you can take towards further improvement. For example, at the next social interaction, you might choose to talk less and listen more! Or, at your next speech for toastmasters, maybe you need to have a sharper hook at the beginning of your talk to grab the audience’s attention.

So those are three ways introverts can level up their communication skills. Remember, social interaction is a living breathing phenomenon. Conversations take on lives of their own. It’s a magical and fun journey to go on every time you interact with someone. Try to build rapport every time you engage with another individual.

Let’s recap:

1) seek out opportunities (with friends, social gatherings, meet ups, networking events)

2) challenge yourself (practice the hard stuff)

3) evaluate yourself (ask yourself how that interaction went) make points and figure out what you make better for the next interaction (I.e., talk less listen more etc.)

>>>

Practice those strategies, make them your own, and keep them in your communication toolkit! Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes progress. Not every social interaction is going to be flawless, and it doesn’t have to be. Extroverts have their moments of social anxiety too, and that’s ok! Learn from those interaction and get better with each conversation. When you are confident and comfortable, that will set the tone for a great conversation! Above all, enjoy the conversations you have, that’s the most important thing~!
