How To Fix A Shaky Voice

If you have a shaky voice when nervous, learn my 4 exercises for calming your nerves, loosening your facial muscles, and relaxing your tongue, to prevent your voice from shaking. Stop your shaky voice anxiety by doing these exercises before you do public speaking, have a conversation or go into an interview!

When we get nervous, we tend to shake. Our hands tremble and our voice quivers. I covered how to stop shaky hands in a previous lesson, and today we are talking about how to stop your voice from shaking. 

Today I’m teaching you 4 steps to take to control your voice from shaking out of nervousness. 

Do these 4 different exercises before jumping on stage, heading into a interview, a meeting, or a casual conversation with friends.

This will help you control your voice so you can communicate with confidence and clarity. 

Let’s get right into it.

Warm up your face:

Smile as big as you can and release. Imagine smiling from one ear to the other. If you have trouble smiling big, mouth the letters O and E and say this aloud a few times. The other thing you can do is practice saying “cheese, please” out loud. Do this in a mirror so that you see wat you are doing and hear how it sounds. 

These three exercises will help you warm up your facial muscles. 

Warm up your tongue:

Warm up your tongue so you don’t get caught on words. 

Prevent your voice from trembling because your loosening up a very strong muscle here

Roll your tongue around your mouth (21 times in one direction, 21 times in another). I demonstrate the correct way of doing these exercises in the video, so check it out if you’re interested.

Relaxing your tongue is important so that you will more comfortably and easily speak the words.

Warm up your jaw:

Open and close your mouth to loosening your jaw. You can force yawn, if that comes naturally to you. But even if it doesn’t, just open and close your mouth and stretch your jaw. When we yawn we tend to do this naturally, so maybe it’s something you do when you’re super sleepy (ha, ha). 

Warm up the words:

A personally favorite of mine is doing tongue twisters. You’ll laugh in the process, which will put you in a happier mood and that’s a great mindset to be in especially when performing. When you’re more relaxed, you’ll perform better and be less nervous! These are great side effects of tongue twisters.

Our main reason for doing these tongue twisters is to warm up your words. Choose any tongue twister you would like, in any language you feel most comfortable with, and say them aloud!

Here are some of my favorites:

  • She sells seashells by the seashore.
  • How much wood does a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I would aim to do these exercises before any public speaking engagement – which is in fact any time we communicate with people in public 😊 so basically always!

Practice these steps, try them out, add them to your toolkit and make them your own!
