Stage Presence

Learn how to improve your stage presence by fixing your posture. You will learn top posture-fixing exercises to help you command the stage and room the next time you are in front of an audience.

Having good posture is essential for captivating the audience through excellent stage presence.

Good posture is not only paramount for projecting confidence but also signaling to the audience, ‘I know what I’m talking about, I’m a credible speaker so listen up.’

Now that we’re on our screens and hunched over our phones our posture is deteriorating. Let’s nip bad posture it in the bud before it’s too late. These tips will not only help your interpersonal communication and public speaking but how you feel throughout the day.

Here is your Explearning Guide to good posture:

Quit making yourself small and powerless!

Make sure that you are not hunching shoulders or starting at the ground. Confident speakers have a big stage presence by using sweeping, outwardly, and big hand gestures. They speak loudly and confidently through their nonverbals. They take up space with their hand gestures and commanding stage presence.

Keep your Head Straight

Be sure that you are not cocking your head to either side. Confident speakers are not trying to be cutesy and win the favor of their audience this way. If they are authentic, they be well received by the audience. Tilting or leaning to one side shows insecurity and uncertainty which is anathema to star-level stage presence. Additionally, make sure you are facing your audience or interlocutors head on. Generally, it helps to point your toes in the direction of those to whom you are speaking. It signals your undivided attention.

The Shoulder blade Squeeze

If you feel your shoulders caving in try rolling your shoulders back and imagine pinching your shoulder blades together. The best thing is to practice squeezing your shoulder blades so that you are aware of the sensation it gives. This way, you’ll be able to bust it out on stage or in the meeting room when you feel yourself slouching. If you enjoy pushups then this would be another exercise to build into your workout routine to target the same muscle group we’re talking about here. You may notice that people with strong upper backs tend to have good posture. The next time you’re at a gym, drop and give me 20!

Straighten your spine

For good posture and excellent stage presence you might consider strengthening your spine. A great exercise for this is to stand against a wall and raise your arms overhead slowly. This is a great one to build into your workday when you take a break or as part of your wind-down at the end of the day. Work it into your daily routine to ensure you do it. If you prefer visualization, then you can imagine a string lifting you up. Dancers have exquisite posture so you can imagine channeling the posture of a ballerina when you visualize the imaginary string. Be sure to practice these exercises so that you can familiarize your muscles with the feeling of good posture.

By improving your posture, you’re boosting your mood, increasing confidence and get your audience and interlocutors to want to listen to you.
