Making a good first impression can be hard. It's easy to judge and be judged after one encounter with someone. Having an open mind with someone you just meet or are getting to know can be a huge positive in rapport building. You'll notice more positive social interactions when you open your mind and be less judgy.

Having an open mind comes with myriad benefits. Our goal is to have an open mind with first impressions and with subsequent interactions.

In this livestream, we discuss the benefits of open-mindedness in social interaction and in a similar vein, we touch upon cross-cultural communications.

A general rule of thumb is to cast all judgment aside. And to refrain from making assumptions. The only assumption that we can make is to assume that people with have different worldviews, fields of experience, and lifestyle habits that are different from your own.

Let those differences be a communication enabler. Allow those nuances that exist in the gray in-between to serve as fodder for deep and meaningful interactions.

And remember, the more authentically you show up to the first meeting or one-thousandth's meeting, the smoother the conversation will run.

  • don't make assumptions
  • give them the benefit of the doubt
  • understand that they might have a different worldview from you (symbolic interactionism*)
  • factor cross-cultural communications if relevant**

Making as good a first impression as you can

  • focus on the person you're interacting with
  • smile and have a positive outlook
  • seek to find common ground to build rapport
  • speak in positive language
  • be authentic and memorable

When we're warm and genuine, people will like you more for it and remember how you made them feel. And with long-lasting positive impressions, that can make all the difference.

Don't worry too much about being memorable, be yourself and everything will fall nicely into place. Most importantly be authentic and have an open-mind paired with an open-heart.

There's so much we can learn from each other. Let's let that learning take place.
