In this livestream, we discuss the top communication mistakes people make.

If you want to learn how to become a more effective communicator, it is important to be a self-aware communicator. Being cognizant of potential causes of miscommunication and misunderstandings that are rooted in poor communication can help us identify areas for improvement.

When it comes to the top communication mistakes here are some things to watch out for:

  • using a one-size-fits all communication approach
  • assuming you know who your audience is (sans actually knowing them)
  • using the same communication style for everyone you interact with
  • not being aware of tonality and how it can effect the transmission of your message
  • lacking awareness of cross-cultural differences in your delivery of the message
  • using non-sensical language for the purpose of sounding important (thereby alienating the person)
  • no defining unfamiliar terms or technical industry-specific jargon to your audience
  • replying with "no" to shut someone down and discourage future dialogue on the topic
  • reacting instead of responding
  • constantly interrupting people
  • not practicing active listening
  • not demonstrating empathy in communication

So, those are the top communication no-no's if you want to be an effective communicator. And effective communicator is clear, inclusive of people, open-minded, kind, non-judgmental, and empathetic.

By increasing our awareness of what not to do when communicating, we increases our chances of a smooth transmission of our message. By knowing our audience (who we are communicating with during social interaction) we can better tailor our message and delivery style to their needs and understanding.
